SK8 4 EDUCATE

In 2010, Sonja made me president of California Amateur Skateboarding League and granted me a scholarship program for the inner-city kids. I've been seeking funds and sponsors since then so that the inner-City may be able to experience these wonderful skate competitions.

Almost every pro today was inspired by C.A.S.L The league was founded, over 30 years ago, in 1982, by Frank Hawk with the help of two other "Skater Parents," Sonja Catelano and Jeanne Hoffman to promote the sport of skateboarding as both recreational and a serious athletic endeavor to skaters of all ages. C.A.S.L has been a stepping stone for skaters like Ryan Sheckler, Paul- "P.Rod" Rodriguez, Christian Hosoi, and the list goes on. Almost everyone in the industry skated C.A.S.L at least once. C.A.S.L has been restructured to bring you a competition every month and to skateparks like VANS skate park, Skate Lab, Volcom, and other local skate parks. In every competition CA.S.L rewards kids with trophies, prizes, product, and fulfills their dreams of being praised for their skating abilities.

Our team, a group of kids from broken families of the less well ofF areas of Los Angeles has become a force to be reckoned with in C.A.S.L.

A group of kids that may have ended up being influenced by the bad outlets of Los Angeles like gangs or drugs were able to overcome obstacles and change their lifestyle for the better, thus improving their scholastic abilities, learning how to be a part of a team, and finding others who were in similar unfortunate circumstances that they could depend on and identify with. These kids no longer felt alone nor secluded but became part of a family; a family we know as the Garage Board Shop family.

If these others who attempt to set up programs for kids, but set them up in a practical way and without an understanding of the culture behind and around these kids, thus their attempts do not interest most kids consumed in the L.A. culture. This is why the program "'SK8 4 Educate" practices a less practical urban method to reach these kids. We reach out to them with urban art, music, and skateboarding. Our methods might seem unorthodox but they are understood by the youth.

This is why we wish to expand our program to several other communities. Each ran similar, but by members that know and understand and have experienced growing up in the local culture and community. respect, and someone they can look to for guidance.
